    Michael Alig to be Released
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

    by Steve Lewis

Yesterday, prior to my trip up the river to visit my old friend Michael Alig, I posted a status update on facebook: “Off to visit Michael Alig in the joint..... Oooh it makes me wonder.” The ensuing firestorm of comments of support, disgust and dispute continued all night and into this morning. The concept that “clublic” enemy number one, the notorious party monster, will once again walk amongst us evokes serious emotional reactions. Michael told me that he will most likely be released sometime between this August and October. Comments on my facebook page ranged from “Thank god” to “God damn him to hell forever.” Many reported the facts of the case, many chose to remember a Michael before the drugs and infamy. I have been on this emotional roller coaster for many years. Michael has, before and during his incarceration, been a friend and a betrayer, a partner and an enemy, someone to admire and someone who disgusts me. I was joined in the visit by Larry Seidler, who flew in from San Francisco to meet me and mete out tough love to our friend in that tough prison.

Jesse James' friends reportedly furious over affair
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Jesse James' friends are reportedly furious with him for cheating on Sandra Bullock.

The motorcycle enthusiast has begged forgiveness from his wife of nearly five years for his alleged affair with tattoo "model" Tatts McGee, but those close to him feel deeply let down.

A source told website RadarOnline.com: "I'm sure Sandra's gonna be leaving him after this. I know he's begging her for forgiveness, and I know he feels awful. He really does love her but he's just a pig.

"Of course all these biker guys are the same. I been hanging with them for years and they all mess around with dirty chicks - the dirtier the better - so I shouldn't be surprised. Looks like the end of marriage number three for Jesse, and that's really sad."

The friend also launched an attack on heavily tattooed model-and-stripper Michelle - who reportedly received $30,000 for her kiss and tell story of her alleged affair, which she claims lasted 11 months - with Jesse, branding her a "tramp".

The source added: "What a stupid, stupid thing to do, mess around on Sandy with a girl like that? She is nothing but a tramp. Disgusting. I don't know what he was thinking but I know what he was thinking with."

wtf she got $30,000 for this story. that explains why she did it. low rent biotch.

    Fats?
So I'm wondering, has anyone tried using avocado as a butter substitute in cooking?
I was just thinking about like, puff pastries for example, traditionally require cold real deal butter and you can't even use margarine or it won't have the right effect on the dough because things like I Can't Believe It's Not Butter are too high in water content and don't have enough fat to hold the dough together.

So a vegan alternative to the needed high-fat content in butter for cooking purposes would be....? I've never tried Earth Balance since they don't sell it where I live so that stuff is also a mystery to me. Is it more like a spread, or is it hard and waxy like real butter?

Confessions of a Congressional Drama Queen
    The Drama Queen Caucus

Reps. Nathan Deal and Zach Wamp did it to boost their campaigns for governor.

Rep. Luis Gutierrez did it to focus attention on his pet issue, immigration.

And Reps. Jason Altmire and Dennis Kucinich seem to be doing it just to enjoy the rare opportunity to bask in the national spotlight.

Call it the Drama Queen Caucus — members of Congress who labor mostly in obscurity, lucky to get a daytime cable hit, let alone a Sunday talk show invitation, until the big vote nears. And then they engage in an oh-so-public exercise deliberating over how they will vote or go to extraordinary ends demonstrating how strongly they feel about the way they have already decided to vote.

While Congressional Budget Office scores, whip counts and arcane procedural techniques may draw much of the attention in the countdown to the House health care vote, the venerable Washington tradition of showboating has inevitably focused attention on a group of heretofore little-known representatives suddenly cast as leading actors in the capital’s high drama.

And drama is the right word.

    Sheehan's Stand
Retired general testifies in support of DADT by blaming gays for military failures and sexual assaults, believes burden is on gays to prove military will ''become better''

    by Chris Geidner
    Published on March 19, 2010, 10:01am

Since Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) first began hearings last month on the military's ''Don't Ask, Don't Tell'' policy,'' he's had many witnesses voice disagreement with him. Never, though, has the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee been as plainly frustrated as he was on Thursday morning, March 18, during the testimony of retired Marine Corps Gen. John J. Sheehan.

At one point during the hearing, Levin looked directly at Sheehan and ended a line of questioning by telling the former Supreme Allied Commander of the Atlantic, ''I think the burden to maintain a discriminatory policy is on the people who maintain the policy – not on the people who want to end it.''

Gen. John J. Sheehan (Ret.), left, speaks with Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin (D-Mich.), right, following a committee hearing on Thursday, March 18, about the ''Don't Ask, Don't Tell'' policy.

That moment came just after Sheehan had declared, ''I think the burden has to be on demonstrating that something is going to become better.''

Beyond his standard of demanding results before implementation of the policy change, Sheehan used his time at the hearing to blame – in part – openly gay Dutch troops for the massacre of Muslims in Srebrenica, to agree that he had a different standard for gay and lesbian servicemembers than he had for straight ones, and to place the genesis of his 2010 viewpoint about DADT on an alleged same-sex sexual assault that occurred in the ''early years of Vietnam.''

It's like they'll do anything to prove that the average heterosexual white male apple-pie eatin' soldier would never do anything like sexually assault a fellow service member or civilian. I'm so sick of this climate of "We can't say anything critical about soldiers because they give their lives for us." I respect the military as much as any of these people, but you can't ignore their long history of criminal violence. These people are trained to kill for God's sake, why is it so hard to believe?

All glammed up for a night on the red carpet, the stars of "Sex and the City" were among the stars at Paris Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada on Thursday night (March 18).

With Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis all joined together, the trio of ladies smiled as they snatched up the Best Ensemble Award at the official convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners.

Meanwhile, the gals are all getting ready for the May 27 release of their hit movie's sequel - which is directed by Michael Patrick King.

Of the amazing popularity that "Sex and the City" has garnered, Miss Nixon recently told Variety that "people have just grown very fond of the characters, the wit of the writing and the glamour and the fashion and all that."

She adds, "One of the things that has kept it so strong is that (writer-director) Michael Patrick King doesn't try to take us through the same thing because it worked so well the last time. If we stayed the same, going out and drinking and having sex, we would turn into 'Absolutely Fabulous,' which is not what we are. He has allowed us to age, and the audience has allowed us to come along for the ride."

Betty White Not Pleased with Jesse James

    Chicago-Sun Times

Even in Hollywood -- a town known for rampant infidelity, sleazy affairs, marital woes and serial romances -- the mood Thursday was widespread shock
as new details arose about Sandra Bullock's husband Jesse James and his alleged cheating with fetish model and ex-stripper Michelle ''Bombshell'' McGee.

    • Among Bullock's many friends in the acting community is comedy legend Betty White, who reportedly has told friends she's so upset about Bullock's painful humiliation, the former ''Golden Girl'' cannot talk about James without using language so blue, it clearly is not printable in a family newspaper.

    Here's what's new:

    • Bullock is said to be ''a total mess'' about McGee's claim that she and James had an 11-month affair as Bullock filmed her Oscar-winning role in "The Blind Side."

''She is like a cauldron of both rage and intense pain,'' said one of the actress' closest associates. ''Since this happened while Sandy was off doing the best work of her career ... a project that meant so much to her, because it was all about family values -- it makes this even creepier."

    • Given Bullock's attachment to James' daughter Sunny, 5, by his ex-porn star former wife Janine Lindemulder, the actress is said to be very upset about the possibility she would lose contact with the little girl she has been helping her husband raise. James gained sole custody of Sunny from Lindemulder in December. Bullock realizes a divorce from James could jeopardize any relationship with Sunny.

    • Bullock moved out of the Long Beach, Calif., home she shared with James on Monday -- after learning In Touch magazine was going to break the story, but before it became public knowledge. ''She knew the paparazzi would be swarming like mad hornets, possibly worse than anything Britney [Spears] or Tiger [Woods] have faced,'' said a longtime friend of the actress.

    • Along with canceling her trip to London for this week's British opening of ''The Blind Side,'' Bullock also dropped out of promotions tied to the widely advertised DVD release of her film Tuesday.

    • Leigh Ann Tuohy, the woman Bullock portrayed in ''The Blind Side,'' has reached out to the actress and offered strong words of encouragement and support.

    TV Ratings Thursday

CBS’ First round coverage of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament had an easy time upsetting the Thursday ratings race. While the return of ABC’s FlashForward fizzled, dropping to just a 1.9 adults 18-49 rating. NBC’s line up of new episodes were all over the map vs. last week, but its nightly 18-49 ratings average was exactly the same.

FlashForward’s new episode return FellFlat (icwydt) on Thursday night, down 10% from the 2.1 adults 18-49 rating it ended its fall run with to just a 1.9 rating.

NBC had the yin and the yang going last night, as Community was up 11% to a 2.1 adults 18-49 rating, while Parks & Recreation was down 5% to a 2.0 rating. The Office fell 5% to a season low 3.6 rating, but 30 Rock was up 3% to a 3.0 rating. Finally, The Marriage Ref was up 8% to a 2.8 adults 18-49 rating.

Bryan Singer on 'X-Men: First Class': It's got to be about Magneto and Professor X

Through the years, comic-book films took audiences to all the predictable places, including the grim streets of Gotham City and the doomed spires of planet Krypton, but, a decade ago, a new type of comic-book film had the audacity to set its opening sequence in a truly unexpected place -- the gates of Auschwitz, where Jewish families were bring marched through mud on their way to death and despair.

From those first moments, "X-Men" set itself apart from the entire Hollywood history of comic-book adaptations and marked the beginning of this current era of fanboy cinema, which has dominated the box office and elevated San Diego's Comic-Con International into something resembling a Cannes for capes.

"The opening, it really was a declaration of intent," producer Lauren Shuler Donner said of that sequence, which showed a terrified young boy exhibiting mutant powers as his family was separated by German guards. "It said to the audience this is a serious film, grounded in the realistic and the historic and somewhat dark. It was so smart. And it was all totally Bryan."

That would be Bryan Singer, the director of "X-Men" and its first sequel, who was sitting next to Shuler Donner in her office on a recent afternoon. The pair both had big smiles on their faces -- they had been reunited by an invitation to reminisce about the legacy of the July 2000 release, which they were happy to do, but the conversation kept veering into giddy plans for the future. Singer is returning to the "X-Men" universe, it's clear now, for a project called "X-Men: First Class"; it's all just a matter of timing.

    Arizona Drops Children’s Health Program
Arizona on Thursday became the first state to eliminate its Children’s Health Insurance Program when Gov. Jan Brewer signed an austere budget that will leave nearly 47,000 low-income children without coverage.

The Arizona budget is a vivid reflection of how the fiscal crisis afflicting state governments is cutting deeply into health care. The state also will roll back Medicaid coverage for childless adults in a move that is expected to eventually drop 310,000 people from the rolls.

State leaders said they were left with few choices because of a $2.6 billion projected shortfall next year. But hospital officials and advocates for low-income people said they were worried that emergency rooms would be overrun by patients who had few other options for care, and that children might suffer enduring developmental problems because of inadequate medical attention.

    Amanda Blank for Interview Mag

To say that Amanda Blank is a bit of a spitfire would be a terrific understatement. To say that she is a rapping, singing, dancing, laughing, nonstop-talking, one-woman party machine might be more accurate.

A frequent co-conspirator of Santigold, Spank Rock, and M.I.A., the Philly-based musician has come into her own with I Love You (Downtown Records, 2009) —a confectionery offering of club-approved summertime rap jams and seamless, goofball pop music.

"It took me a long time to figure out how to write a song," the 26-year-old Blank says. "I was so used to working with other people, it took a minute to sort out exactly what I wanted to say. Mostly, I wanted to make a record for girls like me . . . or really for girls and gay boys. I never understood those girls who didn't really like other girls. Not me—I've got, like, 50,000 superclose girlfriends. This record is for them."

    THIS SH*T IS BANANAS, B-A-N-A-N-A-S
Chemical in Bananas Identified as Potent Inhibitor of HIV Infection

ScienceDaily (Mar. 16, 2010) — A potent new inhibitor of HIV, derived from bananas, may open the door to new treatments to prevent sexual transmission of HIV, according to a newly published University of Michigan Medical School study.

Scientists have an emerging interest in lectins, naturally occurring chemicals in plants, because of their ability to halt the chain of reaction that leads to a variety of infections.

In laboratory tests, BanLec, the lectin found in bananas, was as potent as two current anti-HIV drugs. Based on the findings published March 19 in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, BanLec may become a less expensive new component of applied vaginal microbicides, researchers say.

New ways of stopping the spread of the HIV are vitally needed. The rate of new infections of HIV is outpacing the rate of new individuals getting anti-retroviral drugs by 2.5 to1, and at present it appears an effective vaccine is years away.

"HIV is still rampant in the U.S. and the explosion in poorer countries continues to be a bad problem because of tremendous human suffering and the cost of treating it," says study senior author David Marvovitz, M.D., professor of internal medicine at the U-M Medical School.

Although condom use is quite effective, condoms are most successful in preventing infection if used consistently and correctly, which is often not the case.

"That's particularly true in developing countries where women have little control over sexual encounters so development of a long-lasting, self-applied microbicide is very attractive," Markovitz says.

Some of the most promising compounds for inhibiting vaginal and rectal HIV transmission are agents that block HIV prior to integration into its target cell.

The new research describes the complex actions of lectins and their ability to outsmart HIV. Lectins are sugar-binding proteins. They can identify foreign invaders, like a virus, and attach themselves to the pathogen.

The U-M team discovered BanLec, the lectin in bananas, can inhibit HIV infection by binding to the sugar-rich HIV-1 envelope protein, gp120, and blocking its entry to the body.

Co-authors Erwin J. Goldstein, Ph.D., professor emeritus of biological chemistry at U-M and Harry C. Winter, Ph.D., research assistant professor in biological chemistry at U-M, developed the biopurification method to isolate BanLec from bananas. Following their work, the U-M team discovered BanLec is an effective anti-HIV lectin and is similar in potency to T-20 and maraviroc, two anti-HIV drugs currently in clinical use.

Yet therapies using BanLec could be cheaper to create than current anti-retroviral medications which use synthetically produced components, plus BanLec may provide a wider range of protection, researchers say.

"The problem with some HIV drugs is that the virus can mutate and become resistant, but that's much harder to do in the presence of lectins," says lead author Michael D. Swanson, a doctoral student in the graduate program in immunology at the University of Michigan Medical School.

"Lectins can bind to the sugars found on different spots of the HIV-1 envelope, and presumably it will take multiple mutations for the virus to get around them," he says.

Swanson is developing a process to molecularly alter BanLec to enhance its potential clinical utility. Clinical use is considered years away but researchers believe it could be used alone or with other anti-HIV drugs as a vaginal microbicide that prevents HIV infection.

Authors say even modest success could save millions of lives. Other investigators have estimated that 20 percent coverage with a microbicide that is only 60 percent effective against HIV may prevent up to 2.5 million HIV infections in three years.
